There is nothing that a government cannot get involved in and make worse. It seems to me more and more now that democratic western Europe is being forced to commit economic suicide on the alter of net zero. All previous changes in technology have been because the new technology was better. If wind and water power could have powered the agrarian and industrial revolutions, nobody would have needed to invent the steam engine. If steam engines had been such a good way of powering transport, then the ICE would never have taken off and so on. But the "new" technology of EV's is being forced on us by mandate, not technological advancement. Mandate and coercion are not good ways to get buy in on stuff. Who knew!! I agree with all that. I do my best for recycling and on the days I'm in the office do my best to align with Mrs Tim so we only bring 1 car, etc, etc But I'm increasingly aware of the amount of utterly unnecessary tat that gets made and shipped round the world (Temu, etc) and the knowledge that they're made in a country or 2 where coal fired power stations are the norm and more are being built. It also sticks in my mind that years ago I read that a single Google search used the same power as boiling a kettle and then this morning listening to R4 about deepfake porn and, effectively, the explosion in AI - most of which currently appears to be for scamming I wonder just why the fuck I'm bothering any more. China actually leads the World in renewable energy, both wind and solar. www.woodmac.com/press-releases/china-leader-in-renewables/

Those bastards at Capri Sun have been getting away with it for decades. Never mind them, what about Ford with their Cortinas, Granadas, and Capris. They even named the Escort and Fiesta after a couple of Jazz mags FFS. Not a minge to be seen between them.

I do think modern “Shkodas” are styled very well, better, IMO, than the equivalent VWs.

I think many politicians read 1984 and adopted it as a political manifesto, rather than a warning.

It amuses me this Italian thing of naming cars after their home cities and getting away with it - Ferrari Modena, Alfa Milano. The Jaguar Coventry just wouldn't quite have the same ring. I suppose Vauxhall did do the Luton, but that was appropriately enough a van. Ferrari have gotten away with building a legendary brand using a surname that translates as “Smith”. Imagine a Smith California, Smith GT, Smith 348 etc

That's what the BMW guy said. He reckoned it will only take them a couple of weeks and they would have it figured out. As long as you stay away from BMW dealers after that it should be OK unless BMW keep online contact with all cars all of the time and monitor the use of certain functions, turning them off the next time the car is switched off. Well, my 2017 BMW told me the other day that the brake fluid needs changed this month and lo and behold I then got a phone call from the dealer to tell me the same thing! Yeah, mine rats on me to the local dealer and they call me up to bring it in.

Has anybody got any good experience with, or know of, a reliable company that would ship a car to/from Scandinavia? Thanks Tried this once; vehicle came flat-packed and all you got to assemble it was a tiny Allen key. Nightmare, and and loads of bits left over.

To be honest I was quite surprised to learn they were still building the XE. Me Too. It struggled against the last 3 series so must be light years behind the current one. Did it? Every test I read suggested it was superior to the 3 series.

My holiday future appears to be a road trip to Czech and a week 'Up North'. Hopefully we'll get similar weather to last year. We'll need to keep holidays for moving house at some point as well. Again? Is there a hint of the Traveller about you two? You’re not suggesting his home may have wheels? And a tow hook?

I remember my sister saying that it's a godsend for dog owners - they had an X-Type estate that had one and she said the beauty of it was that it enabled them to access the boot to take things out or put things in with less risk of their labrador making an unscheduled bid for freedom. As a dog owner I agree - it's a lovely feature when you use it. Across all my Tourings I think I used it 3 times.

We went EV shopping at the weekend on the basis that the i-Pace is going back at the beginning of August. The Mercedes salesman told us that they are only selling A Class and CLA at the moment. The huge hike in E Class prices has scared away all their customers and the C Class is dead in the water with engines that no-one wants. They are selling a few SUV's but the EQE and EQS we were in to see are not selling. We could have any colour or spec within a few weeks which must be a scary prospect for the manufacturers and dealers. However quality is also an issue. On opening the door on most of the cars in the showroom there is a piece of silver plastic on the end of the armrest which houses the window and mirror switches. At first glance I thought it was metal, until I got closer. It is like a cheap Binatone radio from the 1970/80's with that criss cross hard silver plastic with a very fake metallic look. Truly awful. Had it been leather or soft touch black it would have elevated the interior massively. The EQE and EQS have massive depreciation of c£25/£30K in the first year. The SL convertible in the showroom was a beautiful thing and felt like a quality item. However at £145,000 I really don't see that moving quickly. Mercedes interiors have been looking like cheap Chinese electrical goods for a while now. Mercedes always used to have interiors that seemed to have a depth of quality and solidity few other brands shared. You sit in a Mercedes now and think to yourself; "this cheap fake trim will be rattling like buggery in a couple of years".

How about this for a bit of luxury…. It could do with spacers on the rear That steering wheel has got to be an aftermarket item. There's no way it came with the car like that. Stick an MSport logo on it and us BMW owners will be all over it.

I remember a woman running into the back of my wife's car while she was stationary at the top of a slip road, waiting to join a carriageway that had been reduced to one lane with cones. By the time the 3rd party had finished they had 2 independent witnesses that claimed they saw my wife reverse back in the car behind. A bit of searching revealed the "independent" witnesses worked for the husband of the woman involved. He was a big guy and came round our house acting all aggressive and basically saying "what are you going to do about it"?". Unfortunately for him I'm a bit of a cunt when things like this happen and waited until dark one night and went round his house and exacted revenge. It would have been cheaper for him to pay up for the repairs to our car.

This is a bit like sport on TV. You used to get pretty much every sport on either Sky or free to view TV but as time has gone on the sports have been spread over lots of different subscription channels and it is financially impossible/ill advised to subscribe to every channel to get all the sport you want. I think a lot of people will make choices by paying for ad free Netflix for example and dropping some other subscription services. Most people hate the adverts. As time goes by though lots of people will find themselves only able to watch a proportion of the TV they would like to watch because of financial constraints. I think it also depends on how often they play adverts. If they follow the US model, advert free would be the only way to go! Pretty much everyone (except me 😞) down our golf club has a “ dodgy stick”. It costs about £45 for the year and they get all the Sky, Netflix, Prime, Box Office events free. I’m thinking of joining them.

How does a turbo work with an EV? Sad that it’s become a trim level across all the models. I sense a class action law suit coming in the US for mis-selling. Can't wait to see the Turbo S version, with the boost turned up.
