I hate this touchscreen stuff ,you have to take your eyes off the road far too much.

I was in Switzerland last week (best mate lives in Morges and it's a beautiful place) and we were ferried between all the mountain walking and hot cheese eating in their new XC90. In general, I was impressed with the interior design and materials (although the steering column stalks are very cheap) on what is effectively the entry level spec (base leather, no wrapped dash or door cards). It is an expensive car though and it's about the same price as an entry level Q7, which is supposed to be the goolies. A relative has recently collected a new Macan and a new Panamera so I've had chance to have a good poke around the competition, The Macan was ok - I wasn't wowed given the level of expectation and the price. The Panamera was lovely - However, this Panamera in question was a diesel 4 S with £31k's worth of options, which puts the list price very close to £130k. At that price, some of the lower environment plastics are of questionable quality (lower door casings, the door sill and b pillar plastics and some of the buttons) and even having hit almost every branch on the options tree, it still had a sack cloth headliner and leather of a middling quality. In terms of material richness, I thought it inferior to an R-Sport or Portfolio XJ. The best car I've experienced this year is the S-Class Merc - even the base car is lovely to look at with robust and expensive looking plastics everywhere. The leather could be better - but given the pricing of the base car, it's very good.

I’ve borrowed three XC90s and I do like them but the build isn’t great. On the last one I had the rear seats shook quite noticeably in the rear view mirror and some of the plastics are very poor. It’s a shame as I would be tempted by the T8 but they don’t feel like they’d stand the test of time.

Aside from the column stalks, what other plastics do you think are poor ?. The XC90 is far superior to Truckzilla.

The shiny black stuff around the screen looks particularly nasty and reflects terribly, it also feels cheap they’ve used it for a lot of the contact points like the window switches and steering wheel buttons. The bigger problem I have with the XC90 is that it looks good but feels insubstantial.

Having driven both and spent time in a far bit of each of the range I would say for mainstream you cannot beat a Volkswagen product. No overly impressed myself - the interior of my Scirocco is not really its strongpoint - OK but very oridinary which is the same that I would say about the newer Golfs and Polos that the garage loans me - I'd rather the inside of the latest Vauxhalls or Citroens for instance.

What? That comment is sacrilege, surely?

What? That comment is sacrilege, surely? Quite probably, but for the life of me, I can't see what journalists see when they step inside a VW. Nearly every road test I've read of a Scirocco, for instance, comments on the quality of the interior, but aside from the carpets, material for material it's exactly as my Astra was.

Sara had a look at a golf as a motability car but the interior was, crap basically. No idea how they got away with it being so bad.
