.....Whilst it's true that London dwellers have better public transport options - I think they know full well that cars are the only viable options in many use cases, they just don't care.I've seen a think tank report that identifies making driving more unpleasant and expensive is a recommended and viable strategy to reduce car usage. All of unpleasant factions jump on this and sane voices are simply not present in the group think circle jerk (because climate change, inequality, blah, blah, blah). This. Apart from time at college my home base was in the South East for the first 31 years of my life. Only when I moved to the West Midlands did I truly appreciate how utterly London-centric all policy is, not just transport. If the M6 was round London it would have 10 lanes in each direction by now for example. Or buses and trains might actually run more than once a day to anywhere useful, if at all.

Edinburgh City Council has had a policy for the last 20+ years of discouraging cars in the city and they have continuously created more and more obstacles to bringing a car in.
We seldom visit Edinburgh now and from a public transport perspective, the cost of a train to Edinburgh from Glasgow would make your eyes water. The last couple of times we have been through we have taken the car to the Ingliston park and ride and have got the tram in to town from there.

I can usually get a discount on train fares (OAP Travel Card!) and when they're feeling generous, another little bit with my Blue Light card. (The latter was apparently happening a while ago but I missed out). Herself and I have used the Ingliston park & ride a few times now, it's great!

They are all designed by people who live in places where public transport exists. There is no bus serving my mother’s not particularly small village at all. As and when she can no longer drive, she’ll need to move to either a village with a daily bus service or a town with a high street she can totter to. At this point, the anti-car brigade usually say “oh but you can get your weekly shop delivered to your home”. Yes, but you can’t get life delivered to your home. And it’s well-documented that loss of the ability to get around and being stuck at home alone is a killer for old people living alone. Does the local council run some sort of Dial-A-Bus service (hopefully NOT with Robbie Coltrane as the driver!)? We have one where we are and apparently it's accessible to those below pension age as well. It runs until quite late - I've seen it around at 10pm for example.
