Classy and restrained - a bit like me!! Do a Fiat Coupe, M5 and recently departed 370Z suggest restraint? Unless of course the purchase has been provoked by your sensible Micra purchase

Er, well, compared with a lot of overstyled new machinery I'd say the Fiat is a model of classiness (?) and the M5 is certainly restrained compared with BMWs current - and future, seeing their concepts in the mags - range.
Not sure how the 370Z fits into that though
Old skool maybe?

Took delivery of one of these last Thursday; a bit pricey compared to some I know, but it's for a good cause (IMHO anyway), and there will only ever be 396 made. I've been a supporter of this project for a couple of years now, and I'm very hopeful it will come to fruition before I'm too old to go and see it fly! I contacted the makers (RSC) to ask about replacing the leather strap for a steel bracelet; nice as the leather one is it's too big/thick to fit comfortable under my shirt and jacket sleeves, plus the strap will quickly wear with all the typing I have to do these days. I must say they were very helpful, and are replacing the strap for me FOC, even though it was my choice in the first place! Top work. Received my watch back yesterday, now with steel bracelet instead of leather strap. Very impressed with the company's way of dealing with my request; free swap and post back, only cost me £6 to send to Belgium, recorded, insured and tracked. They are RSC in Belgium, for anyone who wants to have a look at their range.

Well-timed (no pun intended) in terms of your celebrations etc - I'd have stayed with leather I think. Gone right off metal straps!

I'm toying with the idea of treating myself to a proper watch for my imminent big birthday but am still struggling to justify the cash.
To all those of you who have splurged on nice watches over the years - do you regret any of those decisions and do you actually wear the watch(es) enough? I'd hate not to use mine if I did take the plunge and would want to take care of it and enjoy the pride of ownership, but I have a nagging suspicion that it might become the horological equivalent of a garage queen.
Thoughts appreciated. (Oh, and it's a TAG Heuer Monaco Gulf edition).

I wear the most expensive one I own more than any other - but wear something more modest when it'll end up in the pool's lockers for an hour and a half at a time! No regrets for me.

I think my most expensive watch is the Suunto from earlier in this thread and until I got the Casio Edifice a few weeks ago I wore the Suunto most days.
The Seiko Kinetic I bought for £150 in January 2005 was my most expensive watch to that point and it got worn all the time, apart from when I was doing DIY or something like that at which point I wore a Casio G Shock, that I still have and it has a nice patina in between the paint spots!

I wear my Planet Ocean everyday and the only time it sits on my bedside table is if I am playing golf, gardening or at the swimming pool. It is still within 1 second of the accurate time after a month.

I like leather straps but if you wear them everyday they soon start to age as scuffs and oil and sweat start to take their toll, so metal for everyday and leather for special occasion.

I like it because it looks quite simple and understated but then again it does kind of look like a first watch you'd give to a youngster.

Hey, it's versatile though - even your pen can wear one:

The Raymond Weil Herself bought me years ago has a leather strap, and it's lovely to wear. I should do so more often really.

I saw an analogue Casio in the airport the other day that had a Bluetooth connection. I had to look it up to see what good that would do and it basically sets its time to the same as your phone, so when you travel abroad you don't have to set your watch. Nothing else as far as I could tell, no notifications etc.

^ Sledgehammer to crack a wallnut? Casio do some watches with traditional hands but they are driven by a stepper motor and the minute hand moves every 20 or 30 seconds only. To adjust when the hour changes in spring/autumn is a total pain as there is no crown to pull out and turn to adjust the hands, you have to go through a very complicated menu system to reach the "page" from where the hands can be adjusted, then to put back one hour you have to hold a button down whilst the hands advance 11 hours. At least it's not so bad when you have to advance by one hour, but to amend the time de to a flight to another time zone must be a real pain that probably involves having to take the instruction book on your trip

Let's just say "How did this happen?" (and that's not all of them, although some were given to me and the rest were bought largely at special offer prices making them irresistible). Now you know one of the reasons I hate the twice yearly hour change ! EDIT: and of course, thank goodness for Poundland and their sheets of watch batteries, otherwise a lot of the items below would have been discarded by now !

I’m swapping my work Samsung S8 edge for an iPhone XS, as the Samsung drives me mad, my iPhone X is much better for emails / texts, has reception when the Samsung doesn’t and is more stable. I
have ordered an Apple Watch 4 to replace my Huawei watch, which has been really excellent. The battery life is down to about 14 hours now but it is 2.5 years old and I get quite a lot of phone calls and notifications through the day which does drain the battery. I’m so used to a smart watch now, would feel a bit lost without one during the day and it really does make things easier.

Quite like this, but I am still wary of battery life. The LG one I have has an app which keeps the screen on all the time, and it'll last an evening out but not much longer. This talks about a week, but who knows? Probably not the best strap option.

I looked at that before deciding to swap phones, nice looking smart watch (with a different straps) and a lot cheaper than the Tag. The latest OS is a big improvement, but spend £850 on the Mont Blanc and you get exactly the same software/UI as my 2.5 yr old watch.

Don't they update? The LG did, and I wish it hadn't!

I'm just going to stick to my analogue watch and keep my phone for all the communication stuff!

It depends on how many messages / emails etc you have during the working day. I get more than my fair share so it’s really useful, especially in meetings when you can take a quick glance to check on the importance, which is a bit more discreet than picking my phone or having my laptop open.
It’s even better at the weekend as I can leave my work phone in Lindsay’s bag and not miss any issues that I need to be aware of.
I can see how it wouldn’t be be particularly useful for some, but it really is for me.

I like having notifications on the watch. It’s nice not having to drag the phone out of a pocket to see whether something needs answering or not.
