Perhaps we should start a thread now in anticipation of another trip to the polls?
Anyone got a prediction on a date?
October is a first suggestion from one of my colleagues.

October is a first suggestion from one of my colleagues. Within minutes of the exit poll result last night, the pundits on one of the election shows (C4 I think) were saying that a) another GE was inevitable and b) it would happen by autumn.

After last night, anything can happen in the next six months. Will may get the heave ho from her "supporters"? Will Corbyn get even more support from the loonie left? Corbyn running the country has got to be the worst possible outcome.

Nope, next May I reckon. Autumn is too soon: nothing happens between now and Autumn as there's a two month recess tucked in there so neither no party will have been able to show any kind of progress in the interim period. Also the flavour of the EU exit negotiations will be tasted by then so that will affect the positioning from a manifesto point of view.
I could be wrong; I also just found out that a former colleague has been returned as the MP for Croydon Central. I won't state my opinions here on that or her. Which tells you all you need to know.

Yup, next May for me too.

Well it's a good way to waste another £130m and will keep Brenda from Bristol on the telly.

I think it will be a lot longer than next year. I reckon that once the Brexit negotiations begin, the spotlight will move away from the election. The country can't afford a faltering start to the Brexit negotiations and if we had another GE, it would put those negotiations back another 4 or 5 months which just isn't acceptable with a 2 year window. The DUP are staunch Brexiteers so there won't be any dissent there but there might be from some of the Tories who wanted to remain in the EU, so it is possible that it might force some more realistic trade deal.
I have long suspected that TM's statement that no deal was better than a bad deal was just a bit of posturing to show the EU that we can be tough too but our hand has been somewhat weakened. Much as there is general dislike of the money grabbing bankers and financiers of London, I think it is essential that we get a deal which keeps London as a world financial centre and prevents the leaking of jobs and money to Europe.
A tough job ahead which I think will prevent another GE in the near future. If we get a crap EU agreement or no agreement then all bets are off and hell fire will rain down on us with Corbyn bouncing us back to the 70's and potentially the SNP coming back to the fore with a totally unsubstantiated claim that they will get Scotland back into the EU (say goodbye to free University places, free prescriptions and reasonable tax rates as the deficit has to be reduced to no more than 1% to even get an interview!)

I liked Paxman's quote about Tim Farron as ' a man who must be pleasantly surprised to be recognised when he sits down to family lunch.'

It's too soon for me to even think about this! Me too. I'm steering clear of anything to do with it for the foreseeable.

don't blame Corbin, Sturgeon or anyone else if we 'bounce back to the 70's' - be clear where responsibility for this lies.
I certainly don't blame them for the mess we are in at the moment and it is entirely of the Tory's making. However if someone else gets in to power it then becomes their responsibility where they take us. We don't need to go back to the 70's but the policies that Corbyn seems to want to invoke would put us straight in the time machine. There is such a massive hole in the middle of British politics at the moment that someone needs to take the initiative and grasp it.

If the Conservative party don't offer an opportunity for a positive future that people 'in the centre' will be minded to vote for. I agree: it's entirely in their own hands. However that doesn't absolve Corbyn of the responsibility for taking us back to the bad old times if he does get in to power: that's a completely independent and unrelated decision over which he has complete discretion.
