We don't have a washer-dryer - never have - just a normal washing machine built into the kitchen units (Kirsty wouldn't approve), albeit a new top-of-the-range Bosch one that is considerably better than its Hotpoint predecessor. Our washing gets air-dried, preferably outside in the garden if possible - it just smells nicer afterwards.

When the weather isn’t nice enough to hang the washing out, heated airers are the answer. No need for a tumble dryer if you have one.

We have a laundry room on the side of the house for full Kirsty approval. The washing machine is a Hotpoint and the tumble dryer some make I can't remember. It replaced a Bosch that we sent back as it took ages to dry and failed when moisture got behind the touch screen. I prefer putting clothes on the line, it does make a difference. What type of irons have you guys got?

I’ve tried to remember, but I have no idea what iron we have. All I know is we haven’t had to buy one in a long time and Lindsay hasn’t said it needs replacing, so it must be good.

Although I genuinely don’t know.l what iron we have! We need to up the car discussions. You’ve said you might change the LR and may even buy something else. What’s on the short list?

Has it not been said for some time that many cars are like "White goods"?

I'd upgrade the Discovery if I could get a bargain but as other have said the trade off would be the trade in. The other option is a second car, if an M2 could be snapped up at a price that would make a salesman cry I'd go for it.

It’s about the cost to change of course and in a normal situation when values drop, the gap narrows. It must have been early 2008 when that happened as I got a terrible trade in value for the 130i but the Clubman was a huge amount less than the lost price so it only cost a couple of £k to change. Might be different now if they really don’t want to take prt ex stock in, but maybe more people will want to buy used than new to keep their monthlies down. Who knows, but it will be interesting to see what happens.

I probably would get a 5 despite the looks. It's just so annoying that the height of the boot is lower as our dog crate won't fit in but they are a better car to drive. I do really like the 4 but I do like technology and I'd like some of the newer kit, particularly by way of sat nav. I've actually looked at X7s as they have equipment you'll be familiar with but that front end even a mother couldn't love.

The X7 grille is becoming less offensive over time, but LR need to sort the 5’s rear as that just doesn’t get better and would be more of a deal breaker for me.

For those who suffer from hayfever - don't dry your washing outside (it fills with pollen, especially bedding) I don't suffer but Mrs M does and for this reason we use the dryer all year round. Which is a shame as I agree with Racing that it smells fresher outside but a small price to pay for a happy wife!

Excellent, back on topic after a diversion about cars (isn't there a whole other section for that? ). Mrs Tim is averse to flying things that have more than 2 legs so while in theory drying washing outside would be fine the reality is that it wouldn't happen. We have a rotary dryer here (anyone else call them a whirly gig?) and the cover hasn't been off it since we moved despite her suggesting she'd use it.

We have a fold up clothes drying rack that we use in one of the spare bedrooms to dry clothing (it's not done to hang your washing out on a line here), but I like my towels big and fluffy so they go in the dryer.

I thought dishwashers were washer/dryers, just without the drum (probably for the best, that!).

What type of irons have you guys got? Philips steam iron, made in Singapore not like the current "made in China" rubbish, which is branded as Philips but not made by them. Philips is now a healthcare company, and the TV's, radios etc badged as Philips are made by someone else just licencing the Philips brand name EDIT: Specially for all those steam-iron fans out there:

We don't use a line either - we're not in Naples! Just one of those folding drying racks. Inside in the mezzanine room if it's nasty outside. Out on the decking in the garden if it's nice outside.

I don't use A line, I have four, or five if the sticky buds are dry. Very handy until the local witch stole a fleece blanket and cut another one up.

No worse wash with modern detergents and a big electric saving as less heating.

No worse wash with modern detergents and a big electric saving as less heating. Careful if you have hard water though - using washing liquid a cooler settings saw the end of our previous washing m/c. You need powder and hotter washes to avoid a gunk build up on the outside of the drum (the cost of sorting that isn't worth it on a machine a few years old). Christ how boring is that? I washed the wheels on the 320 at the weekend. So now it has gleaming wheels - albeit ones that have 118k of use behind them - and dirty bodywork with added dust for good measure. Maybe next weekend I'll wash one side but not the other.

If you are Hasda, mess with the heads of customers. Last week there was no 1kg Hasda spread, normally £1:44 per tub. I could go for the so called smart price option but the difference in price is not worth it. Last week the price for the .5kg tub? £!:98!!!!!!!
This week both packs were on sale, the .5kg @ £1:98 and the 1kg £1:36. Mostly I get on with Hasda prices tbh, they are not bad and with a bit of care my budget can get a fair amount. I cannot see where some bod in management thought, this is a great idea.............
