Machu Picchu is primarily why we are going, however Peru is a big place and there are lots of other things to see there. Logistically it is proving harder to plan than previous holidays, however the wife is good at that sort of thing. My brother and his wife went to Machu Picchu earlier this year and loved it. The only issue was the climb up there. They are both very fit, being into distance running and cycling, but even they found the treck up to MP rather a slog. Others in their group were at their wits end, sobbing and saying they can't go on. You will need to prepare yourselves physically for the trip with plenty of gym sessions and/or hill climbing. The issue was not just the relentless climb, but also the effects of the high altitude. You can trek it, which I believe is hard going especially given the altitude, however there is also a train; we are going by train. We are starting off in Lima, spending a few days there and then getting the Peru Hop coach to Cusco which is the base to get to Machu Picchu. The Peru Hop stops at various interesting places on the way and can take from 3-6 days depending on what package you go for, this also helps with gradually acclimatising to the altitude (3399 metres) in Cusco. A few days in Cusco, off to Machu Picchu and then fly back to Lima and then fly home after a couple of days.

Just be bloody careful. I mate of mine goes to Peru every year as his missus is Peruvian and it’s getting more and more unruly unfortunately.

Usually quite last minute for me, but then again all I usually need to plan are accommodation and flights. Everything else I wing it as I go along once I'm there.
My last holiday was two years ago in Tokyo, where I put up with a friend for most of the week, and used my frequent flyer miles for the flights. That gave me quite a lot of room for spending on other stuff while there.

Holiday planning is my wife's department - I just go along with wherever she books - if it's in the UK, booking is usually within a fortnight of the holiday, if it's a 'proper' holiday - i.e. one that lasts more than 3-4 days and is overseas (something we only do about every 5-7 years), maybe a few months in advance.
I'm really not bothered about holidays, living where we do, we pretty much enjoy the lifestyle we enjoy on holiday all summer anyway.
