I'm trying, and failing, not to find that ever so slightly sinister.

I’ve emailed God asking for his opinion on this.

I'm trying, and failing, not to find that ever so slightly sinister. In the original article I read on this it mentioned the motive of encouraging younger people into the Catholic Church. So nothing slightly about it.

I'm not in the slightest religious, but if I am wrong the biggest consolation would be knowing that there must be an especially dreadful circle in Hell for all the paedo-priests (and those who covered up for them).

As a youngster I attended the Methodist Church, Christian Scientist Reading Rooms, and was confirmed into the Church of England. I was also in the Scouts, attending camps up and down the country. In all that time I was never sexually abused or even approached. I don't know whether to be relieved or just accepting that I must have been a particularly unattractive child.

Yes, I managed to get through Cubs, 10 years of boarding school, being confirmed into the CoE and all that jazz...and likewise never experienced anything even remotely untoward.
And looking at photos, I was a cute and small child with white-blond hair.
So perhaps just not all priests, churches and boarding schools are quite the hotbeds of predatory paedophiles that the press likes to make them out to be.
That's not to say it hasn't happened to plenty of people. It's just wrong to suggest it is the rule rather than the exception.

One of my favourite bits of Father Ted was when the subject of paedophile priests came up. Ted was indignant that less than 10% of priests were paedophiles so based on there being 50 million priests in the World probably less than 5 million of them were paedophiles.

That got me thinking about how many priests there really are in the world.
Apparently there are a little over 400,000 Catholic priests worldwide. No such figure is easily available for Anglicans, but there 10 times as many Catholics in the world as there are Anglicans, so it wouldn't be desperately surprising if the total number was less than 100,000, suggesting that there are perhaps only half a million Christian priests on the planet.
In the UK, there are apparently around 8,000 priests, nearly a quarter of whom are women. So even if 10% of the male priests are perverts, then that's about 600 people out of a population of circa 65 million.
Or roughly 0.001% of the population.

If it is activated by making the sign of the cross, what other hand movements could activate it? Certain hand movements favoured by teenage boys on a regular basis?
