Other than 'keep taking them', obviously.
Our ancient iPad is getting to the point where it won't run some updates to apps, and we're going for a cheapo android-based replacement. It has a very easy life, Amazon, eBay, banking and some light browsing but not used for video, gaming, music etc.
Any suggestions? I guess we're looking at 10" screen and low price.

I bought this one for my youngest about 18 months ago (checked and it was £150), more than enough performance for what you need and it hasn’t had any issues plus the battery life is still good. Tablet

OK - thanks for that. I'm presuming that the Chinese state hasn't been extracting your children's data!

We have the same issue. My wife has a iPad Mini that dates back to 2013. It's in immaculate nick and works as it always has but no longer takes updates. What slightly put us off buying a new iPad is the fact that it looks exactly the same as our current one with a very old-school wide black frame around the screen when you turn it on. It just looks outdated even if the software isn't. Not very "Apple".

I'm happy with my Huawei M5. The only thing is you will need to check whether Google is still supported - if it's an older tablet then it should be.

Fire won't have some of the (admittedly small number of) apps we use.

Just make sure you have a good anti-virus installed if it's a tablet. My sister in law's went haywire after she got a virus and they didn't have any protection! (I reckon it was the brother in law watching porn that did it)

I use Brave browser which blocks anything dodgy. It's built in adblock is superb.

I've just had my ancient work laptop (a Dell Thinkpad) replaced with a shiny new and slimline HP EliteBook where you can fold it inside-out and then use the touchscreen as a tablet.
The chap from IT was demonstrating this function and was like "so you fold it over and now you use it like a tablet". He gave me a very startled look when I said I've never had a tablet and could he kindly explain what "using it like a tablet" meant.
But now I know! Quite like the idea that I can scribble on it with the stylus and it will convert my scribble into typing.

I've one of those it replaced a Samsung Galaxy 10" Tablet, the equivalent Samsung was stupid money, the M5 didn't seem to offer anything less than the Samsung and was almost half the price. It's solid, well built, does everything I need it to do and in approx 18m service it's not slowed down one bit.
