I had that with my last pair, which were varifocals. Just could not get on with them, for the same reason as you Simon, and eventually bit the bullet (and cash!) to go back to single prescription lenses. Much better.

I transitioned to varfocals, they are great but took a few weeks to get used to......Asda were £140 for 2 pairs so cheap enough to revert if it didn't work out

How near your face can't you focus? I've always been somewhat long-sighted and about 30cms from my face is about as close as I want to comfortably hold anything I have to read, no matter what size the font, and I generally cope just fine without glasses. I do actually have a pair of reading glasses, to correct the long sight and some mild astigmatism, but I rarely wear them unless very tired, when they help avoid getting a headache. And I have to take them off to do anything other than read.

If they are varifocals, the set up and measurement when you ordered them is critical to get the focal points in the right places. I've had varifocals - for non contact lens periods - for about 5 years. The first pair were great. The second pair were terrible and had to be remeasured and remade FOC. Take yours straight back to the optician and have them checked.

They do have to be fit for purpose. Tesco opticians took two years to give me a refund. I can be a determined bastard when I want/need to.

If you are having trouble focussing right up close, then you should find that the cheap glasses from Poundland etc are adequate - that was what I was advised to buy by the opticians a few years back when I started to have difficulty reading when I still had contact lenses. As my sight deteriorated further it appeared simpler to revert to specs all the time rather than having contact lenses but also needing to carry round a pair of reading specs. Further deterioration led to variofocals but I'm fortunate that I got on with them immediately, softening the blow of their huge cost.
If you have driving glasses that aren't giving you clear sharp vision, then there is something wrong with the prescription

The wife has varifocals (I take the piss, saying its a sign of her getting old), the optician did tell her that some people just can't get on with them so end up needing 2 pairs of glasses, she's found them Ok though, they are bloody expensive!

... they are bloody expensive! No kidding, my current pair were £500 ! For the first time ever, I took out the optician's accidental damage insurance which was around £20

Asda 2 pairs of varfocals for £140, they don't have to be expensive. Quality lens too

^ Because my prescription/vision is so "bad", normal lenses are super-thick and heavy, so I pay for thinner ones, plus A/R coating which all adds to the cost.

And Asda thin the lenses for free, more so on bad prescriptions and include the coatings for free....next!!
Now the choice of frames isn't the biggest but there isn't a need to spend £500 on a pair of glasses, it is a choice.

Although if it was something I had to wear on my face all day everyday, I'd put that in the bracket of things worth spending more on to get nice ones that actually suit me.

Fully agree, you have to find something that suits regardless of where it comes from. With Asda I generally find there are 1 or 2 frames I like/suit in their designer range rather than many, I'd go elsewhere if nothing suited. Current pair are Stepper titanium rimless(German brand part of Zeiss), well made and so light to wear. I appear to be developing moonboots over Asda glasses....weird!!! 😂😂😂

I've just made an amusing discovery. I've had my glasses for years. They were simply the pair in the opticians by my office that by far suited me best. I do recall they were quite pricy but from a brand I had never ever heard of. Anyway, I've just looked it up online and got quite a surprise: samaeyewearshop.com/pages/about-usHahahahahahahahahah...preposterous toss of the highest order!

I have my eyes tested annually at an optician in Fitzrovia. Amazed at how thorough it is.
I can’t read anything with glasses on but I need them to look over there (like for driving, TV, football, presentations). No prescription change last year so I can spend double next time with no guilt.

I'm lucky not to have to wear them but did get a surprise at a recent gathering of friends when more than half of them fished out specs to read the menu. I didn't realise we were getting so old!

I've worn single vision glasses since the age of about 12, I am very short sighted.
