The main issue is practicality. Small boot, useless back seats etc. On that particular front, I am unable to not notice that a nicely-specified 2018 i8 coupe with minimal mileage is about £60k versus about double that new.
That's truly terrible first year depreciation, but thereafter it flattens out quite nicely, meaning that 3 yrs in one shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

The LCI model was launched in early 2018, so any 2018 coupes will be the old model. I’ve just looked on autotrader and the only new ones are convertibles. It’s a proper spotters job telling the difference from pictures, the main difference is a bigger battery, 11.6 vs 7.1KWh bit the standard spec is better, there aren’t many options now. However, 2018 convertibles now start from £77-78k and list price is around £125k (£113k after discount), so still horrendous first year depreciation.

Same money as a new TT with some options. The BMW is definitely more interesting. Are they reliable?

Orange one is nice. Doesn't have the frickin' laser beams, though.

The main issue is practicality. Small boot, useless back seats etc. I've been 4 up on numerous occasions in the TT (now passenger comfort is another matter but how many times do you have more than 2 people in a car?) and you'd be amazed what you can get in boot - 3 banquet tables, 12 chairs and a gazeebo spring to mind.

No, but sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads the first thing I think of whenever lasers are mentioned!

Get back to the original frickin' post...
I guess I've really just gone through this when buying the Touring. For my current lifestyle requirements I needed the dog carrying ability and the economy/performance balance because of the miles I do. Then again I'm not sure I could or would want to buy a new Touring due to the deposit I'd have to put down to make the monthly payments sensible and the depreciation hit I'd take. If I wasn't doing the miles I'd probably opt for the 340i.
I'm in the Qashqai today as Mrs.Sacamano now works from home and it's not doing the miles so I thought I'd give it a run out. I have to say it's a really nice, comfortable car to drive in 1.5 diesel format with the DCT auto box. It feels solid, plenty of tech, no firecracker obviously, but goes along really nicely. I could make a case for it also being all the car I'd ever need.
Anyway, after reading the above, I've given myself a slap and I'd buy an Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

If you want to resolve that issue Bob then do as I have and try a couple of days in a Chrysler Ypsilon - the Nissan will seem like a snorting sportscar after that.

The easiest way to spot an LCI is the coupe badge on the C Pillar.

I'd love to replace the TT with a Golf GTI, but in reality a new MX5 is probably more realistic. My local dealer have had £179 per month offers, with only £500 deposit. 2 year deal with 6k miles per annum.
However, as I'm averaging less than 3k miles, it's not really a sensible option.
If a GTI was the same price, Mrs Chocy might go for it.
Ref, the interior of a TT. Nice in the front, tidy even for my 11 year old son, but a fairly large boot. I'll try to upload a pic.

Good question
For me
Alfa Giulia QF - it’s on the list and will be mine at some point however a 3 year old one at sub 40k makes more sense. BMW M2 comp- 400hp with a manual. What’s not to love. If going down car this is probably the best option only the really irritating BMW infotainment puts me off. Porsche GT4 - only problem is the near 30k cost to change on line and I don’t really see the value in that Alpine a110 - if they launch a manual I’m all over it.
Supra - I would have added this but having looked around one a number of times it’s crap. My most disappointing car for some time. BMW have clearly led the project and Toyota has failed to add any charm. Replaced the nice Z4 leather items with plastic and put a daft body kit on the car. Such a shame seeing as the concept was amazing
Need to buy the missus an SUV at some point, on the list are Alfa Stelvio QF - can’t afford a new one but in a few years Jaguar f-pace - love the look of these and you can get 6 cylinders BMW X3 40i - a diet Stelvio but with added quality and a fair amount cheaper Merc GLC43- as above but better looking Volvo XC90- the ultimate family bus

The really irritating BMW infotainment system? That’s a surprising statement.
I assume an M2 has the same system, give or take, as my car, which frankly I find the most intuitive I’ve tried by a long shot.
And at least it isn’t touchscreen which I can’t abide.
But each to their own.

I drove the M2 at PalmerSport last week (going back with the boys next week too!). It had much more understeer than the M4's had and several people understeered straight on in front of the pits instead of taking the right hander. It had pretty good grunt but not as much as the M4. I asked the instructor about the handling and he said that all the nanny aids were on because they found that when they allowed people to drive with them off, they had far too many disappear off the track backwards. I know there are different skill levels involved but most of the people at PalmerSport have got a bit of ability. What was interesting for me was that when I drove an M4 on the road I thought its lack of grip and traction were big negatives unless I wanted to spend most of the time with some sort of opposite lock - I want it occasionally when I want it and not everytime I try to make a quick exit from a corner or roundabout. However I talked to a guy who has an M2 and he said that his didn't handle like the PS ones but that was probably because he never drove his as hard on the road. He liked his and was contemplating a change to an M2 Comp but after a test drive he wasn't sure he wanted a car as firm for his daily driver but he said it felt more alive than his car.

Haha I did think that would raise a few disgruntled eye brows. TBH my opinion comes as I use our 3 series every couple of months and everytime I use it I moan about it being a complete faff to do most tasks. BMW are not alone in this
I'm aware most things are configurable in the settings menu but its a car not a mobile phone so I'm loathe to do it.

The M2 is in a class of 1. I can't think of something else at the price point with a manual and 4 seats and 400hp.

Decent voice control is the answer, I use it a lot in mine, much quicker/easier/safer to get to information or change settings.

I sometimes think about what’s on sale but a drive in the gt3 stops that process going any further .

Toyotas almost never have charming interiors. There's precious little to admire in the cabin of a GT86 and the last Supra had an interior which wouldn't have looked out of place in a Corolla. So, I don't go to test-drive a Toyota expecting an Audi cabin (not that I like Audi's latest cabins much) and from photos at least, the cabin looks ok to me - the design isn't offensive and BMW's switchgear isn't the worst you could borrow by any stretch of the imagination. And let's face it, the Giulia has a terrible interior but none of us is proposing to kick it out of the garage for that sin.
I agree on the body-kit but the more I see it, the more the shock wears off and in a dark colour, you don't notice it as much.
It appeals to me because I like the idea of a proper small coupe-shaped coupe as opposed to something like an M2 which is more of an upright 2-door saloon shape.
Yes, there is a Cayman 718, but I'd never buy one. Sadly, for me the nth degree of handling balance and "flow" is in chocolate teapot territory for the sort of driving I do, meaning that the engine needs to be charismatic.

I agree with everything Racing has said above and are you sure the Z4 interior is that special in its standard form, i.e. before you've spent a few £k on the options list? I have a strong desire for another 370Z and the Supra is the only obvious alternative (albeit I'd be waiting until they're £30k and Porsches have simply never floated my boat. I realise that means I'm happy enough with a fairly plasticky interior but I'm buying a 6 cylinder, 2 seat, rwd coupe NOT a 4 door family car for motorway cruising - the driving experience (at sub-Queef levels) is more inportant than damped grab handles and soft touch dash - I'm not in the habit of prodding the dash anyway! My experience of flat four engines is that they need a decent exhaust to sound good (apart from the Alfasud) - I tried a 1999 Impreza years ago and the engine sound was dull, backed up by the dealer mentioning that their number 1 optional extra was a sports exhaust. The flat four Boxsters and Caymans I've heard just make a noise.

Trust me its nasty. I drive a Focus and really don't give a hoot about fancy interiors but its cramped, like a GT86, and has zero charm.
If I buy a Toyota I want a Toyota, not the steering wheel from a 118i and clearly the engine and gearbox from a 3 series.
I can't stand fake ducts and the Toyotas full of them. I was close to having a deposit down on one when they were announced and even went to the Toyota in Guildford to have a chat but the more and more news that came out about it just took it off my radar.
And if you think the Alfas got a bad interior, I think its actually rather pleasant, you'll hate the Toyota.
The couple of Z4's I've sat in were at Goodwood and Geneva so were obviously plushed up but it was a nice place to sit.
The Supra might be worth another look when its been given the full GRMN treatment but at the moment compared to something I just wouldn't.
