I love the way you casually mention taking the gearbox on and off several times. Good piece of sorting out there.

I just wish I could do something similar. An MG or Porsche 917 with modern mechanicals/engine and electrics etc.

A photo I took today at Dan G's Bristol meet. If you look closely you can see the catch can for the oil leak under the car.

That's an early one. I see the catch pan too! π

Got a little further today.
Coolant hoses mocked up and heater valve installed. I'm just waiting for some hose clips.
Throttle linkage and choke connected and working.
Started on some wiring. Starter relay (solenoid currently goes straight through the ignition switch which isn't ideal); fan relay and headlight relays (again, these are wired directly through the switch which results in dim lights, not to mention being a fire risk).
Just got to order some more crimp terminals to finish the engine bay wiring.
I've got the otter switch for the fan to install and an override switch.
I can then move onto the handbrake and leaky transfer box.

Handbrake dismantled and seized parts freed up. The only thing I'm going to have to buy is some new brake shoes.
Leaky transfer box is going to be a pain. I've never dismantled a gearbox before - what can possibly go wrong?
The seal that separates the main gearbox oil from the transfer box oil is leaking. This requires removal of the transfer box to change it, which in turn necessitates partial dismantling to get access to some of the nuts that hold it to the min gearbox. All for a 50p seal.

Well that went a lot easier than I thought it would. The gears all appear in good condition. I'll replace the seal and I think I'm going to strip the rest of the transfer box while it's off and replace all the gaskets. There are a couple of snapped studs to deal with too.

Do you have the Fairey overdrive? Prices are mental (cΒ£1300 for a recon unit).
Time flies - βourβ station wagon goes in for the chassis, new bulkhead and respray in 3 weeks.
I scored a remarkable bargain on wheels and tyres due to a bad advert. 5 brand new defender steel wheels, with unused Michelin Latitude cross 750 R16 for Β£200. Each tyre new is about Β£160. I had to go to northumberland to get them, but there are worse parts of the world.

No overdrive, sadly. There are a couple of working, non refurbished units on ebay starting at about Β£250. I am going to the LRO show in September so may have a look then.
I would be tempted to go for the Ashcroft transfer box at Β£300 which raises the high ratio by about the same as the Fairey, but is a more reliable solution.

I know you have a pick up so it isnβt relevant, but in LR circles have you ever come across a way of making a series 3 drivable by someone tall?
My father in law is 6β5β and has somehow driven it for 30 years, but I am a little taller and canβt even get close. Maybe it is body proportions.
I have found Defender solutions but nothing for a Series.

Other than altering the rear bulkhead, no.

Getting slowly closer to engine start. I filled the coolant and it promptly fell out of a split in the radiator. I'm sure it didn't have that when I got it. Hopefully it should solder up without issue.
Most of the basic wiring is done and then it gets the key turned.

It lives! I need to tune the carb as I think it's running lean but I am over the moon to get to this stage.

A little more done today. Mainly sorting out the rats nest of wiring behind the dash.
The cold start light now works when the choke is on; the main beam was wired incorrectly at the switch, stopping the warning light coming on and the dash lights didn't work. All sorted now. The wipers didn't work when I got it and it was simply down to incorrect connections at the motor.
Oh, and it started straight away after I let the fuel pump prime for a few seconds. I may need to install a non return valve in the line.
I still have the oil gauge and voltmeter to wire up although the oil gauge is plumbed in so shows oil pressure.

The Series one works fine. Well it will when I get a new sender for it. I used my laser thermometer to check the temp and the fan cut in at 95 and went off at 86 as it is supposed to.
